Imagine a scifi world where disco dancing is a form of prayer, spacesuits are required burqa-type clothing for both sexes, and the Star Wars movies are a sought-after Holy Grail.

This is the Adolfist religion. In its humble beginnings, though, naïve young messiah Adolf H. Canon doesn’t want any of these things. He is a peace-loving son of God or Dog who hopes to spread the word of peace throughout the galaxy.

But when no one listens to his words of peace, Adolf starts approving of war as a means to an end. He just doesn't know how far his followers will go to achieve that end.

This scathing religious satire spares no faith from its scorn, and casts God himself as the ultimate unreliable narrator.

Writing satire is not easy, but Sameer Ketkar is a master. This book reminded me of what I like best about Douglas Adams. There is what you see happening on the page and what is going on underneath. This is not a book to skim - slow down and have your wits about you. It will be worth it. The writing and emotion is also excellent - I was caught up in many of the scenes by the sheer beauty of description. Definitely recommended. Simple Tricks and Nonsense

Simple Tricks and Nonsense eBook Sameer Ketkar Reviews

"Simple Tricks and Nonsense" is in the company of Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett's "Good Omens". Ketkar brilliantly weaves religious satire into an outlandish and enormously entertaining science fiction adventure. Simple Tricks is not for the faint of heart (or the religious zealot), but is a masterful take on today's religious entities.
Full of adventure and absurdity, “Simple Tricks and Nonsense” is a brilliant satire which addresses various religious and societal concepts. It’s thoroughly entertaining and unique, while also a quick read. Very different from other works I’ve read by the author, but well worth it.
This is a fun, quick read that reminded me a bit of Good Omens. It follows a religious figure in two different time periods as he tries to do the right thing and has mixed luck. The narrative is broken up a little with frequently funny parables. There are many giggles and a few guffaws as the story satirizes religion and culture. The ending wrapped up a little too quickly but overall this was a very fun read.
An provocative and profane story of the creation of humanity and its Messiah told in the vein of Monty Python type humor. The story tells of Adolf Canon, the son of GodorDog, in a journey with all of creation. This entertaining satire pokes fun at various religious concepts, stories and parables throughout and the puns scattered throughout the book are sure to make anyone smile.
Loved this wonderfully sharp and engaging satirical science fiction. The satirizing of religion and culture was hilarious and so true to so many real-life situations. The novel definitely left me with the taste for more.
This is the first of Sameer's books that I've read and as with any new-to-me author, I was skeptical. What a surprise! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and had to force myself to stop reading and go to bed at 1 am every night. The writing style is fun, irreverent and effective. What I enjoyed the most was the very accurate portrayal of what so often goes wrong in religious movements. Sameer is careful not to point his satirical finger at any one actual religion (even though his basic premise involves a son of God trying to guide humanity.)

Simple Tricks and Nonsense really puts "spirituality" into a grand perspective. It's all about God wanting someone to talk to. But despite his best efforts, He can't seem to get any humans into heaven. Humans, it seems, are doomed to be humans, with all of the craziness and suffering that they create and spread. I think Sameer/God is saying, "Don't worry about it too much. It doesn't last long."

Maybe this book could be the basis for a new religion? Anyone ready to go to war for it?
Simple Tricks and Nonsense is a deeply cutting satire that gives you a wry smile on every page. It is a religious satire, but not so much of the truth of god, but as a commentary on how our innocent desire to belong can alter not just what we think, but how we perceive.

Adolf, son of God (Godordog) struggles to bring peace in two incarnations about five hundred years apart. Back and forth, we follow Adolf and his followers. This allows us to see how warped truths and lies in the past evolve into further absurdity in the future. A lot of the names, are colorfully used to remind you that it all goes back to perception, not truth. And sometimes they remind us of our own history.

There are no long passages describing a scene. There are just a ton of ideas as the story constantly rolls along. I really enjoyed the parables of the made up religion that are found between some of the chapters. They are entertaining and really add to how the reader perceives the thought process of a fictional people.

Godordog, what the people named (the real) “God,” is one of many reminders of the power that can be achieved when you combine loyalty with our base instincts. It’s absurdity keeps you entertained every moment, but also reflects on society and religion as much as any satire would hope to. I did check off "some violence," and "some sexual content," for this review. But neither is descriptive, let alone graphic in any way. It's closer to a mention then in the moment.
Writing satire is not easy, but Sameer Ketkar is a master. This book reminded me of what I like best about Douglas Adams. There is what you see happening on the page and what is going on underneath.
